Are you buying auto insurance for the first time? Have you just moved into the local Maryland area?
Here is a quick run-down of what is required in the State of Maryland and an overview of automobile insurance in general.
Every State requires that a driver have automobile insurance coverage. In the State of Maryland the minimum amount of liability coverage required by law is:
$30,000 for bodily injury per person
$60,000 bodily injury per accident; and
$15,000 property damage
When you purchase auto/car insurance (automobile insurance) there are actually two parts to this type of insurance. The first part is Liability insurance that pays for damage and injuries you cause others in an accident. Bodily injury liability pays the medical expenses of others who are injured; property damage liability pays to repair or replace their car(s) or other damaged property.
The second part of your auto insurance is the Collision and Comprehensive insurance. This insurance pays to fix your car or to reimburse you for its current value if it’s damaged beyond repair. Comprehensive and Collision is NOT required by the State of Maryland, but your lender or the leasing agency will want this coverage to protect the asset they are financing.
Collision insurance pays out if your car crashes into an object or another car or if it flips over.
Comprehensive insurance pays out if your car is stolen, or damaged by anything other than car accidents. That includes damage from storms, floods, falling objects, explosions, earthquakes, vandalism or contact with an animal, such as coming in contact with a deer.
Collision and comprehensive are sold together and generally include a deductible, which is how much out-of-pocket you’ll pay before your insurance pays anything. The higher the deductible you choose, the lower your premium will be for your collision and comprehensive coverage.
